Growing plants indoors has become the go-to option for many gardeners who just don’t have the outdoor space, or optimal climate to grow their plants.
Grow tents open up the ability to grow plants indoors and throughout the year, without having to worry about frost dates, as many pests, or the weather.
Even if you do plan on growing outside during the spring, summer and fall, starting your seed indoors gives you a huge head start on the growing season. All of these reasons add to the versatility of a grow tent.
I’ve been using Vivosun’s heat mats for a few seasons now and I’m super happy with them, so I figured let’s try out the Vivosun grow tent as well and see if it’s any good.
I also have a full review of the complete Vivosun grow tent kit.

Dimensions and Specs
Vivosun has a wide variety of grow tent sizes, so let’s break down each of them to help you decide on the right tent.
Grow Tent Features
Let’s walk through some of the key features of the Vivosun line of grow tents.
The exterior fabric is made up of 600D Oxford fabric. Compared some of the more premium tents like Gorilla or AC Infinity, this is quite low as they use 2000D fabric or something comparable.
However, for most home growers, this fabric is plenty durable. And unless you’re growing something that needs every ounce of light to stay in the tent (i.e. cannabis), then a little light leakage isn’t going to destroy your crops.
If you are growing that kind of plant, stop reading as you’ll want to consider these other grow tents.
The interior of Vivosun grow tents is made of 98% reflective mylar to help the effectiveness of your grow lights.
Keeping your grow tent’s humidity and temperature constant is important, and you put a lot of work into that. But unzipping and opening the door regularly to check on your plants kind of restarts that process.
Vivosun tents have a built in observation window so you can check on your plants without having to open up the entire tent each time you want to look at them.
Black Out Zippers
The Vivosun grow tents come with heavy duty zippers that have a lining on the back to block any light from getting in or out of the grow tent.
When you’re using a grow tent, you want the light reflection you can get, so this is an awesome feature. Thus, the reason I call them “black out” or light proof zippers.
Removable Floor Tray
If you’ve ever used a grow tent, you know the floor get really dirty. Since these tents are closed environments, it’s not exactly simple to clean them out.
Having a removable floor tray makes the cleaning process so much easier.
Inner Tool Organizer
As with most grow tents, they also come with a little pocket on the side for holding tools, a light meter, nutrients, etc. This is nice for helping to keep your tent and growing space organized.
The weight capacity of these grow tents depends on the size you get. How much weight your tent can hold is important because you’re going to be hanging grow lights, carbon filters, and more so you need to make sure the tent can withstand that kind of weight before making your decision.
Here are all of the grow tent sizes and weight capacities:
|Tent Size (Feet)||Tent Dimensions (Inches)||Type||Weight (lbs)||Weight Capacity (lbs)||Suggested Plant Count||Cost|
How it Compares to Other Grow Tents
Of course, while it is a very nice grow tent, Vivosun isn’t the only brand making grow tents. Here are how some of the other popular tent brands compare to Vivosun.
Mars Hydro vs Vivosun Grow Tent
Mars Hydro is another popular brand in the indoor growing space. They are most known for their grow lights, but also make great tents and carbon filters.
Their tents are built with 1680D Oxford fabric to prevent light leaks, while Vivosun uses 600D, which is a lesser quality. I would call Mars Hydro slightly better than a middle of the road tent. It’s not as premium as Gorilla, but is a step up from the quality of the Vivosun tents.

Gorilla Grow Tent vs Vivosun Tent
Gorilla is one of the premium names in the grow tent space. Their tents have a 300 lb capacity, and they offer a 1 foot extension to increase the height of the overall tent.
While they do have those extra features, they also come with a heftier price tag.
|Gorilla Grow Tents||Vivosun Grow Tents|
Both have high quality zippers, and a sturdy construction overall. But the Gorilla tents are likely going to last you longer than a Vivosun tent, just based on customer feedback and their team’s efforts to build a great product. If you’re an experienced grower and looking to get one of the best grow tents on the market, check out Gorilla.
However, if you’re just getting started, or don’t have the money to spend $200+ dollars on a tent alone, then the Vivosun might be the better option here.
Additional Items You’ll Need
Unless you buy the complete grow tent kit, you’re going to need a few additional accessories for your grow tent.
- Ventilation kit with duct work
- Carbon filter – most tents fit a 4 inch or 8 inch filter but you’ll need to check which one will fit the specific sized tent you get
- Grow light – Depending on the size of the tent, you’ll want to make sure you get the right light to cover the entire tent for growing
- Grow bags or other plant pots
